August 2023 Véraison…the first signs
In the vineyard…
At the beginning of July, very little rainfall but temperatures rose for a few days with peaks of up to 35-36°C .
At this point, despite the lack of water, the vines are holding up rather well and we are seeing a little scald.
The very first green berries appeared in some early plots.
11 July evening: hail and thunderstorms
Rain and thunderstorms affected the entire coast and were accompanied locally by hail. The damage to the vineyards was limited, with the exception of a few badly affected areas.
Total rainfall varied widely between villages and even within communes. They varied between 35 and 50 mm, with lows of 12 mm in Santenay/Chassagne and highs of 82 mm in Nuits-Saint-Georges/Vosne.
From mid-July onwards, veraison berries were observed more regularly (early veraison stage).
During the week of 10 to 16 July, rainfall averaged 49mm (22mm in Santenay to 151mm north of Nuits-Saint-Georges).
As the end of July approached, there was a succession of rainstorms.
Veraison progressed slowly and unevenly.
Throughout this month, the green work in the vineyard is coming to an end…
The vineyard had to be protected, the trellising had to be refined, the vines had to be trimmed, invasive thistles had to be eliminated and silica had to be spread.
